Afghan Daily Life
Photography by Steve Connors
The intention behind this ensemble of photographs from Afghanistan is to
afford a window into the daily lives of ordinary Afghans in the period
following the toppling of the Taliban government and during which the
international community assumed responsibility for the countryıs future.
Although I attempted to exclude images of war, peripheral references
inevitably crept in. Afghanistan has been in a constant state of war since
the late 1970ıs and the consequences of both the long-term legacy and the
ongoing conflict are still very much a part of daily life for the people of
Afghanistan.

Afghanistan, August 2002
The images in this series were shot between November 2001 and the early Fall
of 2002. During that time I was based in Kabul but travelled around
Afghanistan - North, South and East - with a translator, a driver and
occasionally with a guide. I attempted to record what I felt the people I
met would want us to know about them and about their lives.
As I edited the photographs all these years later I believed I should
reasonably be able to expect that the lives of the people I met would have
been improved beyond recognition. Unfortunately as I read the newspaper
reports and look at the photographs that accompany them, I see that is not
so.

Sunoak Kites
In the late 1960s Richard Langdon became disillusioned with the U.S. Army and left for India to study with wise men. While there he saw all the local kites and family kite making. One teacher there said "walk in the woods, swim and do something fun every day." So, Mr. Langdon moved to a farm in Crawford County, Ind., built a pond and made kites, incorporating his family into the business. In the early 1980s Jim Keown met up with Richard, they became fast friends. As the family retired out Jim started designing and working more closely with him. The kites are made in a barn in English, Ind., and Jim has a small trading post on state road 64 open on the weekends. Remember one sky one world!
