ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MARC MASTERSON

Marc MastersonNow in his seventh season of leadership at Actors Theatre, Masterson is an award-winning director specializing in new work and innovative productions of the classics. Actors directing credits include Natural Selection, The Crucible, The Shaker Chair, Betrayal, After Ashley, Tallgrass Gothic, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Second Death of Priscilla, Limonade Tous les Jours, Wonderful World and his acclaimed three-actor production of Macbeth, which explored innovative ways of incorporating multimedia into traditional theatrical form.

As a producer, he has brought new artists to Louisville audiences, including playwrights August Wilson, Theresa Rebeck, Craig Wright, Pearl Cleage and dozens of Humana Festival playwrights. With more than 100 professional productions as a director to his credit, other favorites include The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam (2000), Compleat Female Stage Beauty by Jeffrey Hatcher (American Theatre Critics citation 1999) and Gross Indecency: Three Trials of Oscar Wilde by Moises Kaufman (1999). He led the creation of Actors Theatre’s first Education department and numerous community outreach efforts.

Masterson earned his M.F.A. from the University of Pittsburgh and a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University. He subsequently taught at both universities. He served as Producing Director of City Theatre in Pittsburgh for 20 years. He was founder and chairman of the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Alliance, as well as a board member for both the Citizens for the Arts in Pennsylvania and Leadership Pittsburgh and served as a panel member for the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. He won the Man of the Year Vectors Award in 1998 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pittsburgh New Works Festival. He is married to Patricia Melvin, and they have two daughters ­ Laura and Alex.


MANAGING DIRECTOR JENNIFER BIELSTEIN
Jennifer BielsteinMs. Bielstein joined Actors Theatre of Louisville in the fall of 2006. She was recently elected to the boards of Partnership for Creative Economies, Arts and Cultural Attractions Council and National Coporate Theatre Fund. She is a member of the 2008 Leadership Louisville class. Ms. Bielstein moved from Chicago, Ill., where she served as Executive Director of Writers' Theatre. During her tenture there she opened a second venue and more than doubled the operations of the company including the programming, audiences and revenues. Previously she worked as Director of Marketing and Communications for Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where she was responsible for almost $6 million in annual revenues through ticket sales.

Ms. Bielstein also worked for About Face Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Apple Tree Theatre and Lincoln Park Zoo where she helped to create and launch the successful Jammin' at the Zoo series in 1994. Ms. Bielstein served as an officer of the Board of the League of Chicago Theatres representing almost 200 area theatres, and as chair of the League's Marketing Committee through which she spearheaded development of a city-wide program to introduce new audiences to theatre, called Theatre Thursdays.


She was also on the board of the Glencoe Chamber of Commerce and About Face Theatre, where she co-chaired the Strategic Planning and Facilities Committee, was Secretary of the Producers Association of Chicago-Area Theatres and served as a review panelist for the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

Ms. Bielstein is a graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in business administration and theatre and has spoken on panels for the American Marketing Association, the Arts and Business Council of Chicago, Roosevelt University, Illinois Theatre Association, League of Chicago Theatres Annual Conference, School of the Art Institute and Kellogg School of Business.
